Act I of my chamber opera Both Eyes Open will have a semi-staged workshop premiere at the Winchester Cultural Center in Las Vegas. Our piece is presented through the Nevada Encounters of New Music (NEON) Festival, and features performers Kelvin Chan, Kalean Ung, John Duykers, Joel Davel & Marja Mutru of the Paul Dresher Ensemble, members of Nextet, and is conducted by Virko Baley, with video projections by Kwame Bruan and direction by Melissa Weaver. This Friday, 1/29/16 at 7:30pm, U.C. Berkeley's Center for Japanese Studies, Department of Music, Department of Theater, Dance & Performance, and First Look Sonoma are partnering to produce a 30-minute workshop of my chamber opera Both Eyes Open with a libretto by Philip Kan Gotanda, and featuring singers John Duykers, Kalen Ung, actor Hesed Kim, and Marja Mutru and Joel Davel of the Paul Dresher Ensemble. We will also be doing another music workshops of the entire 90-minute piece (scored for singers, actor, pierrot sextet and chorus) at the University of Nevada later this year.
Through haunting dreams and memories, Both Eyes Open tells the story of a Japanese-American farmer whose life was ripped apart after being interned during WWII. A mythical character, the Daruma Doll, and the ghost of his wife, Catherine, come to life to guide him and pull him from the brink of despair. We have been working on this project for several years and I'm thrilled it is finally coming to fruition!
