Act I of my chamber opera Both Eyes Open will have a semi-staged workshop premiere at the Winchester Cultural Center in Las Vegas. Our piece is presented through the Nevada Encounters of New Music (NEON) Festival, and features performers Kelvin Chan, Kalean Ung, John Duykers, Joel Davel & Marja Mutru of the Paul Dresher Ensemble, members of Nextet, and is conducted by Virko Baley, with video projections by Kwame Bruan and direction by Melissa Weaver. Over the past several years I've been working closely with librettist Philip Kan Gotanda on this haunting story of betrayal and redemption about a Japanese-American farmer who loses everything when he is sent to an internment camp during WWII. This Friday, 1/29/16 at 7:30pm, U.C. Berkeley's Center for Japanese Studies, Department of Music, Department of Theater, Dance & Performance, and First Look Sonoma are partnering to produce a 30-minute workshop of my chamber opera Both Eyes Open with a libretto by Philip Kan Gotanda, and featuring singers John Duykers, Kalen Ung, actor Hesed Kim, and Marja Mutru and Joel Davel of the Paul Dresher Ensemble. We will also be doing two more music workshops of the entire 90-minute piece (scored for singers, actor, pierrot sextet and chorus) at the University of Nevada and at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA later this year. The premiere is planned in 2017 with the Paul Dresher Ensemble in San Francisco and NYC.
Through haunting dreams and memories, Both Eyes Open tells the story of a Japanese-American farmer whose life was ripped apart after being interned during WWII. A mythical character, the Daruma Doll, and the ghost of his wife, Catherine, come to life to guide him and pull him from the brink of despair. We have been working on this project for several years and I'm thrilled it is finally coming to fruition!

The Potato King of Block 72 is awarded a commission from New Music USA, and a premiere with the Paul Dresher Ensemble is planned for the 2016-2017 season on the East and West Coasts.
A Breath of Arches for string quartet and four MIDI foot controllers was commissioned by and awarded the grand prize for the Third Angle/Russell New Ideas In Music Competition.
Glass Blue Cleft for string quartet chosen as the winner of the New York Composers Circle and Music Now Competitions.
I have been chosen as the composer-in-residence for Ironworks on the Edge, a contemporary dance and dance-documentary production company run by long-time collaborator Amy Yopp-Sullivan. Ironworks has just commissioned The Table Where We Met, an evening-length piece for violin and processed string quartet samples. Violinist Esther Noh will give the premiere in the Fall of 2012, featuring samples of her strinq quartet Praxis.
I've been invited to spend the summer in Sardinia, Italy at the Le Ville Matte Music Residency, sponsored by the capital city of Cagliari. A new piece, Sette Momenti for flute, violin, viola and piano will commissioned by the program, and visiting composers and performers will give lessons and masterclasses. Sette Momenti will be premiered and professionally recorded.
Apricots of Andjuar (a predecessor to The Potato King of Block 72) is awarded a commission from the Jerome Foundation's JFunds Commissioning Program.
